In this country, most people reach for cold drinks when the temperatures rise and want to refresh themselves with a drink. In many hot countries or desert regions it is common to drink hot tea to cool off despite the heat. Which drink makes the most sense in summer?
It provides refreshment while drinking cold drinks and briefly cools the mouth, esophagus and stomach. In this regard, it is claimed that the body then actively tries to warm up the cold liquid. But in the meantime, it is assumed that this happens simply passively through body heat.
However, cold drinks do not provide a real decrease in temperature, because even a liter of ice-cold water lowers body temperature by half a degree at most. However, cold refreshment makes you sweat less, resulting in less cooling of the body and more warming. Also, if you drink ice-cold drinks too quickly, it can easily upset your stomach.
Many tend to avoid hot tea or coffee on summer days. The heat of these drinks spreads to the stomach after drinking, making you feel even hotter at first. Sensory cells signal the body that it needs to cool down. You start sweating and your body temperature gradually drops a little.
Hot drinks actually make more sense when they’re hot – even if a cold drink is good for you and provides refreshment. It’s up to you which variant you choose and whether you’re aiming for a short-term or slightly longer-lasting cooling effect.
Since the human body sweats a lot in the summer, it’s important to drink enough fluids, especially when you’re pushing yourself. You should drink one and a half to two liters of water every day. At very high temperatures or physical exertion, even three to four liters are recommended. Whether it’s a hot or cold drink, the important thing is that you drink enough!
In order not to overheat, body temperature is regulated by sweating: evaporation of sweat on the skin provides cooling. Therefore, the lost fluid must be compensated by drinking, because water is necessary for the processes in the cells, organs and general health.
Since electrolytes such as potassium and sodium are not produced by the body and are excreted during sweating, they must be taken with food and drinks. They are vital for regulating acid-base and water balance and for numerous metabolic processes.
