The little dog knows his homeland like the back of his hand. So it’s no surprise that she set out as a tourism ambassador this summer and shared insider tips for a trip or (short) vacation in the Freiburg region. Below are his top 8, which he has awarded with five bones or stars.
Why go south with an avalanche of cars when dreamy beaches are just around the corner? Salavaux beach, on the south shore of Lake Murten, is about two hours from Zurich by car or train. Build endless sand castles on Europe’s longest natural freshwater beach, explore the lake by canoeing, kayak or stand-up paddle boarding, or just relax. The beaches of Gletterens and Portalban on the shores of Lake Neuchâtel also have the feeling of a pure holiday right next to you. Ideal places for kiting or beach volleyball. The beach frisbee game is also fun. Or you can admire the beautiful sunset, as Louki likes to do.
Unforgettable view of a summer walk: Niremont at 1514 m above sea level. M. offers an all-round view of the Jurassic chain from Lake Geneva to Mont-Blanc and can be hiked with the whole family on a circular route. This year it is also part of the 26 Summits walking competition. Hint: There is a pet farm and a mini train for kids on the descent. You can also explore the peat bog “Les Mauvaises Places”. Be sure to take your binoculars with you, you might spot a three-toed woodpecker or a caper grouse. Caution: Louki stays on a leash here to protect wildlife.
If the thermometer rises, a boat trip with a gentle breeze provides a pleasant refreshment. Traveling in Schiffenensee is still more sustainable. Because the «d’Grandfey» – a twelve-seat boat – is driven by the sun. A trip on an electric solar boat takes an hour and a half. As the Schiffenensee, a reservoir created in 1963, extends into the city of Freiburg, the route goes there and back again. On the way you learn a lot about the dam wall, hermitage, castles and bridges. Four-legged Louki enjoying the view from the shore.
Those who vacation at Camping Muntelier feel like they are in another world. The sunset over there looks like it came out of a picture book. The public lido’s garden restaurant, for example, is one of the best places for sunset selfies and is also a popular snack spot. Of course, it is also worth seeing the sunrise. If you like to get up early, you can go for a sunrise walk in Kaisereg. Murten’s castle courtyard offers unforgettable sunrises and sunsets, including views of Lake Murten. Even Louki is surprised.
Banksy is the high traveler of the genre. But others also do impressive street art. This is illustrated by the ArtiChoke street art circuit that runs right through the middle of the medieval town of Estavayer-le-Lac. Around 20 works by national and international artists can be explored on foot or by bike on the tour. Anyone who likes to take pictures and wants to fill their social media account or travel blog will get their money’s worth here. The program can be completed with a water ski tour under Louki’s curious gaze.
Located in the canton of Friborg, Rue is one of the smallest cities in Europe. It arose around 1150, along with about fourteen other cities. A tour explains which sides have fought for the Rue throughout history and also leads to the privately owned castle. Previous owners included the Fabre family. Ferdinand Fabre, one of the pioneers of modern aviation, tested a glider he had built at the castle in 1898. Don’t miss: Not far from the Rue are the Chavanettes waterfalls. An ideal travel destination for families and four-legged friends like Louki.
The “Taste my Friborg” food tour is an event in the truest sense of the word. It combines a city tour of Freiburg with a gourmet walk where you can taste many local specialties. For example, Cuchaule AOP, a saffron bread native to the region, or of course cheese flavors such as Le Gruyère AOP and Vacherin Fribourgeois AOP. There is also craft beer and wine from the region. You also know trendy places. The gourmet tour starts at the tourist office near the train station.
In 1980, HR Giger won the Oscar for best visual effects in the blockbuster Alien. Those who want to experience the fantastic art of Churer, who died in 2014 at the age of 74, can do so in the medieval town of Gruyères. CastleSt. Germain contains the largest collection of his works and is one of the top 10 museums in the area. It celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. But it’s best to leave Louki out. Because creepy extraterrestrials are not for small dogs. Additional tip: Also visit HR Giger Bar and Gruyeres Castle.
