With the first episode “Secret Invasion”, Marvel has set the direction: in the last minutes of the episode, Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders), a character who has been part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) for many years, dies. And that death actually seems final, unlike many other MCU deaths before it. But does this also apply to G’iah (Emily Clarke) to the one in episode 3 (apparently?) of villain Gravik (Kingsley Ben Adir) is killed?
We’re pretty sure G’iah’s death is just a sham and the daughter of ex-Skrull leader Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) still alive. And not just because two Secret Invasion female protagonists dying in much the same way would feel a bit repetitive. But also because it There are some hints to this in the previous trailers for “Secret Invasion” – and some conceivable explanations:
That’s why G’iah lives!
Particularly in the second “Secret Invasion” trailer, a closer look reveals some scenes that seem to prove that G’iah is still alive. For example, there’s a scene at minute 0:52 where G’iah descends into a room where she finds numerous figures (humans? or Skrulls?) on benches with futuristic-looking devices:
This scene was clearly not seen in the first three episodes. There’s also a scene that shows G’iah armed with a shotgun and back to back with (presumably) Nick Fury’s wife Varra, aka Priscilla (Charlayne Woodard). You can find this scene in the trailer at minute 1:36:
G’iah also appears to be involved in a handful of other scenes, including the helicopter attack on a motorcade seen in both trailers. But that’s not as clear as the two scenes above.
How could G’iah have survived?
The question remains how G’iah managed to survive being shot by Gravik and we even see her lying on the floor with a gunshot wound to the chest and in Skrull form – the latter was mentioned in Secret Invasion as a clear sign of the demise of a Skrull.
The simplest explanation would be that G’iah simply faked her death. She should know that to do that she has to go back to her natural form and maybe the wound just wasn’t fatal. After all, Gravik doesn’t check if she’s really dead by feeling her pulse,
It could also be that another Skrull was just posing as G’iah. It would also be fitting that this episode has already shown several times how Skrulls take on different human forms. Which seems odd though, why doesn’t Gravik realize he shot the wrong Skrull even though he double checked?
The third and most interesting variant: The remaining scenes of the Secret Invasion trailers may not show G’iah at all, but rather the human female she assumed. That would mean Talos’ daughter was dead, but Emilia Clarke would still have a part to play in the series – just like a human.
Of course, there’s also a possibility that the above scenes are flashbacks, but we think that’s highly unlikely. It’s also conceivable that Marvel deliberately included these scenes in the trailers to mislead us. Or “Secret Invasion” was heavily revised during production and G’iah was originally supposed to play a role later on, but was subsequently killed off in Episode 3.
Presumably, G’iah’s (alleged) death will be cleared up in the next episode “Secret Invasion”, which will be released on Disney+ on July 12, 2023.
