So why is it so hot?: The Sun is farthest from Earth on Thursday.

As of Thursday evening, the earth will be approximately 152 million kilometers from the sun.

Typical summer weather is expected in Switzerland on Thursday: it will be mostly sunny and friendly, in addition to occasional thunderstorms. According to the Meteo News forecast, the temperature will rise to 28 degrees.

Curious: The sun is at its furthest point from Earth on this very day. Thursday separates the earth from the sun by about 152 million kilometers – that’s 3 million kilometers more than average. Despite this, we are sweating like crazy. The astronomical phenomenon is called aphelion. This is the furthest point from the sun in a planetary orbit. Earth will reach this point on Thursday at 22:08.

That’s why it’s still so hot

The distance between the Sun and the Earth varies due to the Earth’s elliptical orbit. Due to the gravitational effects of other planets and the Moon, the orbit is elliptical rather than spherical.

At the beginning of January, an aphelion-opposite phenomenon begins: then the earth is at what is known as the perihelion and is at its smallest distance from the sun.

Although the sun is currently at its furthest point from the earth, it is hot. How can it be? This is due to a factor that has a much greater influence on weather: the tilt of the earth’s axis. In the summer, the northern hemisphere is tilted towards the sun, which means it is exposed to much greater than normal exposure to its radiation, while in the winter the southern hemisphere is tilted towards the sun and vice versa.

However, the distance to the sun makes a difference: the greater the distance, the slower the earth moves in its orbit. Earth is about 3500 kilometers per hour slower at the aurora than at perihelion. Therefore, summer is the longest season in the northern hemisphere. It leaves winter behind for almost five days.
