Instead of buying expensive cleaning agents, it’s often enough to mix baking soda with hot water, says Johanna Schaufelberger, head of farmers and health at Strickhof, the competence center for agriculture, food and home economics in Lindau ZH. This is not only cheaper, but also more environmentally friendly. Soda is also suitable for cleaning very dirty ovens. In this case, according to Schaufelberger, you need to mix a quarter of the baking soda and water to form a paste. The viscous mass can be applied to dirty areas with a pastry brush and left to soak overnight. “The next morning, everything can be easily wiped off with a wet cloth or rag.”
Mold may occur in the joints and corners of the bathroom and kitchen due to humidity. If the mold hasn’t penetrated too deeply yet, a paste of baking soda and water can also help here. The German consumer magazine Öko-Test writes how it works: Put water and baking soda in a one-to-one ratio in a glass and mix. Put the fine paste on a toothbrush and scrub with the mortar. Rinse with plenty of water after about an hour.
Schaufelberger says baking soda is also excellent for neutralizing odors. You can put a small bowl of dry baking soda in the refrigerator to remove unpleasant odors from fish and other foods in the refrigerator. Baking soda absorbs odors overnight. “Fridge smells less without having to clean it completely.” The multi-purpose product can also be used for difficult-to-clean carpets, for example where the dog sleeps. Here, you can spread it out and leave it overnight, according to Schaufelberger. “The next morning you can sweep the dust and the smell is gone.”
Silver cutlery or jewelry will tarnish over time. When it comes into contact with oxygen, it oxidizes and silver sulfide forms on the surface. It is harmless to health, but has a metallic or sulfurous taste and causes black spots on cutlery. According to Schaufelberger, this oxidation process can be reversed by a chemical reaction. You need a large bowl covered with aluminum foil. Add hot water, some salt and baking soda. “Silver can be soaked in a few minutes, then rinsed and dried. It shines like new again.”
Commercially available drain cleaners are often expensive and harmful to the environment. According to Schaufelberger, instead of buying one, you can put two tablespoons of baking soda down the drain and pour a deciliter of vinegar over it. A lot of foam is formed immediately due to the chemical reaction. “It has a strong cleaning action and can remove moderate to stubborn deposits,” says Schaufelberger. However, he recommends putting a cloth or cloth over it to prevent the foam from leaking out of the drain. “The deposits can then be drained with boiling water along with the baking soda residue.”
