“My wife doesn’t want me to take the kids to the zoo…”

My wife and I actually have similar values. We’ve been together for a long time and we’re a good team. Together we have two daughters who are gradually getting old enough that you can go on an excursion with them and they can also see something of the area and not just pop into the pram. So I thought I’d take them to the zoo. Did I think wrong…

My wife thinks zoos are the absolute worst and absolutely does not want our children to look at the animals that are locked up there. That surprised me a bit. We also went to the zoo with our Götti children. Apparently, her opinion of zoos has changed since she became a mother herself.

Personally, I am now torn about the ethics of keeping animals in zoos. On the one hand, zoos can help protect endangered species and promote education, but on the other hand they constitute a restriction on the natural freedom of animals.

I understand both sides, but in the end… it’s just a trip to the zoo. What would you do?
