PASSPORT Many see the white Swiss cross on our red ID card as a plus sign. In fact, we have almost no restrictions when traveling. “If you’re neutral, you won’t make enemies abroad,” some say. However, the Swiss historian Marco Jorio (71) proves with this book that neutrality did not begin 500 years ago, as the Confederates were no longer involved in “foreign affairs”, but as a result of internal political considerations 400 years ago: for Thirty Years. The war drove back the Protestant cantons to avoid civil war with the Catholic cantons.
MONEY Lira, peseta, drachma: You used to have to carry your own wallet for each holiday country. The euro consolidated money in much of Europe. There is now even a global currency in the digital age: Bitcoin, the national currency of El Salvador. The German literary critic and cultural-political correspondent of “Zeit” Ijoma Mangold (52) covered this topic in detail and has since become really addicted to it: he called his defense the “orange pill” – an allusion to the protagonist in the “Matrix” two pills to choose from.
SWIMSUIT “She wears a tight-fitting swimsuit that doesn’t hide anything, a small tummy, surprisingly youthful skin, pale, not very hairy.” He is Richard Wechsler, a well-known Swiss writer, about whom a documentary was made. Famous Swiss writer Peter Stamm (60) wrote this novel after being asked to do a biography. The resulting movie “Interplay” shows Stamm swimming in Trouville (F) not in a swimsuit, but with a shirt, backpack, long pants and shoes in hand.
TOOTHBRUSH Oral hygiene should not be neglected during the holidays. But dentists Johan Wölber of the University of Freiburg (D) and Christian Tennert of the University of Bern in their joint book “Have you ever seen a monkey with a toothbrush?” they ask. Two scientists state that the teeth of the animals still do not rot and fall out in a short time. Tooth decay and periodontitis is more of a human problem. The reason: malnutrition. Wölber and Tennert show you how to eat properly and use it to brush your teeth.
T SHIRT “I’m not arguing, I’m just explaining why I’m right”: This t-shirt print is the slogan at the introduction to Swiss science reporter Reto U. Schneider’s (60) new book. It may not be the right answer for vacationers who want to explore foreign places and need to have an open mind. But no matter how openly one travels, conflicts are inevitable. Maybe a Meloni fan will serve you in Rimini (I): then what? Then this clever book will help – additional knowledge of Italian is an advantage for the argument.
PYJAMAS “Where are you?” The verbal question in the smartphone age, “still awake?” which is written – because it is sent during sleepy times and you don’t want to wake anyone up by calling. “Still awake?” This is also the title of a distorted new book by German author Benjamin von Stuckrad-Barre (48) about the German publishing house Axel Springer and its “Bild” headquarters. Recognition The tireless and now fired editor-in-chief Julian Reichelt (43) kept his employees on their toes with such text messages. And the book about it is a page turner that keeps you awake.
SUNTAN CREAM Adequate protection against UV rays through long-sleeved clothing, a hat or sunscreen is very important today. Austrian-American climate economist and environmental scientist Gernot Wagner (43) in his new book “What if we dim the sun?” he asks. It addresses an attempt to use geoengineering to halt climate change: particles in the atmosphere should make the sun less hot on the earth. As Wagner wrote, it’s a risky game with serious consequences.
UMBRELLA There are books where the sun always shines (“The Stranger” by Albert Camus) and there are books where it rains forever (“And the donkey saw the angel” by Nick Cave). And in this novel by TC Boyle (74), both extremes of weather converge: drought reigns on the west coast of the USA, and floods in supposedly safe areas on the east coast. And for Cat, located in Florida, at least, it is advisable to take a raincoat with you when you go out: “She went outside on her own for a moment, hands shaking as she sat, playing with her umbrella buckle and opening her feet on the rain-soaked asphalt.»
WALKING SHOES In the departures hall, in front of the Gotthard tunnel, on the swimming beach: crowds gather everywhere during the holiday season – mass tourism. But we actually like crowds as long as they’re on the go. German scientist Karl-Heinz Göttert (80) describes this impressively in his recently published book. From the Roman parades to the protest marches of the “Friday for Future” movement, people have always marched together. Keep this in mind if you’re not alone on the hike. And take good shoes with you!
COVERING In order for women to live with equal rights in all areas of society, they need to be more visible. However, this leaves them more vulnerable and subject to psychological and physical violence. German women’s rights activist and non-fiction writer Susanne Kaiser (43) calls this a “feminist paradox”. And she explains that hate speech on social media has led to more attacks on women. However, retreating to anonymity is not an option. On the contrary, this book shows the wounds – for only when they can be seen does everyone understand that healing is sorely needed here.
