How does walking barefoot affect the foot muscles?

“Walking barefoot works the ligaments and fine muscles in the soles of the feet,” says Markus Knupp, 50, an orthopedist and foot surgeon from Basel. Our feet are a very sensitive organ of touch, with more than 30 muscles, more than 100 ligaments and around 70,000 nerve endings. However, the expert says that thin muscles atrophy because we wear shoes all the time. When you walk barefoot on pebbles, meadow or sand, the arch of the foot (the inner part of the foot between the heel and the toe) is flattened by stimulation of the uneven ground. As a result, muscles and ligaments contract and become stronger.

What complaints are barefoot particularly helpful for?

“Anyone who suffers from swollen feet would benefit greatly from walking barefoot as it stimulates blood circulation,” says Knupp. As the muscles contract, the blood in the veins is pumped faster towards the heart and the swelling decreases. According to Knupp, in orthopedics, it is also assumed that the onset of malpositions can be slowed down by walking barefoot. The sooner you start doing this, the better.

The soles of the feet are strongly stimulated, especially on barefoot roads, as they are made of different natural materials.

3

Can it correct foot deformities?

Contrary to popular belief, hallux valgus, in which the arch of the foot flattens or the metatarsal bone slides outward and causes pain, cannot be cured by walking barefoot, according to Knupp. Because the causes of misalignments are complex and cannot be attributed solely to shoes that are too small or too narrow. “Today we know that connective tissue weaknesses or genetic predisposition have the greatest impact,” says the expert. Research on Amazon has shown that people who have never worn shoes in their lives also experience foot problems similar to those in western countries.

4

Who shouldn’t go barefoot?

According to Knupp, people who have problems with upper ankle stability or who frequently sprain their ankles due to weak ligaments should not walk barefoot too often. “It makes more sense to wear heels in situations like this,” she says. The reinforced part of the shoe in the heel area provides stability and support. According to experts, diabetics also need to be careful when walking barefoot. “Diabetes can cause nerve damage, causing numbness in the feet.” This affects the perception, which is especially dangerous in the summer when you don’t feel the bubbles forming.

5

How do you integrate walking barefoot into daily life?

“Walking barefoot on stone or wood floors at home has a stimulating effect,” says Knupp. Meadows, sandy or loamy soils are even better. The alert is especially great on barefoot roads made of different materials such as stones, moss or pine cones. For those who have foot problems and don’t have time to go out barefoot, the expert recommends putting a bowl of sand in the bathroom so they can stand while brushing their teeth. Another way to strengthen the muscles is with balls or rolls, which can be used to stimulate the soles of the feet while standing or sitting – for example, while watching TV. Suitable for:

  • Round plastic tipped hedgehog balls
  • tennis balls
  • golf balls
  • foam black rolls
