There are movies that you watch mainly for their visual appeal. Movies that make you want to put your brain on standby and still have fun. Movies that work by the motto “More is more” always trump the latest action excess with the next, offering show values that the competition will bite at years later. Movies like the blockbusters “Transformers” – and they are now available in the ultimate non-plus-ultra set.
Since June 1, you get all previous “Transformers” movies as a strictly limited collector’s box – which not only contains the sci-fi action hits in the best possible picture and sound quality, but also in a noble collection:
Were the Blu-rays of the movies already worth all the credit, the 4K Blu-rays go one step further. In addition, all fans of the series can look forward to six elegant steel books in a stylish box…
… the only drawback: While the elegant tins are perfectly coordinated in design and therefore cut a really good figure on the shelf even without the magnetically lockable collection box, the set is only complete until the “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” currently running in theaters for the home theater appears. It may take at least a few more months before…
“Transformers” in 4K: perfect demo material for home theaters
We’ve already mentioned it: even the Blu-rays of the movies were totally worth it – not just for the ever-exciting audio commentary, which is included as a bonus and reveals interesting and honest insight, especially from director Michael Bay. Although the content of the “Transformers” hits is often criticized, their technical evaluation in the home theater was particularly impressive.
You can say what you want: but not only the special effects in the “Transformers” movies are always state-of-the-art – but also the evaluation in 4K. The Ultra HD Blu-rays are among the best the author of this article has seen on his OLED TV (Sony Bravia, 65 inch) so far. Sharpness, contrast, depth, colors – everything is really right here. Of course you have to classify that correctly: where in other cases it is positively emphasized that UHD discs retain a certain naturalness despite revision and higher resolution, Michael Bay sees it differently. Completely different.
Even shabby, littered side streets always look aesthetically pleasing to him – because Bay naturally over-stylizes them, just like the rest of his films. Anyone who has a problem with that would not know very well what to do with “Transformers” anyway. Anyone who loves the mind-bending action fireworks for their candy-colored, deliberately unnatural, larger-than-life looks should be happy with the 4K set.
Steelbook set with a difference
While the box of the limited collection of 6 films is relatively unremarkable, the appearance of the films is also reflected in the steel books. They adorn each other’s alien robots – from Optimus Prime for “Transformers” to Bumblebee for “Bumblebee”.
A quick glance is enough to tell the films apart, as the individual cover designs are marked in different colours. Inside you will find – in addition to the Blu-ray and the 4K Blu-ray of the films – scene fragments with which the inlay was designed. Unlike some recent steelbook collections housed in a tin box, the Transformers set saves space. In the cardboard box, the Steelbooks are directly next to each other without a “partition”:
Conclusion: if you want to experience the visual power of the “Transformers” movies in all their glory, you can’t ignore the 4K versions. In the end, everyone has to decide for themselves whether it should be the limited set or whether the standard versions are not enough.
