Everything is different during a week in Basel. People move faster than usual, wear trendier sunglasses and speak other languages - at least in Kleinbasel, where next week’s Art fair, the world’s most important art fair with all its side events, will be held.

In the square in front of the main hall, every second person wears a badge around his neck and must be at an important meeting right away. Hotels are fully booked and some art collectors are chauffeured to Basel from the Dolder Grand in Zurich. The bar at Hotel Les Trois Rois am Rhein resembles a trendy New York club.

Basel in the fire of art

Even if you don’t know much about art and I don’t have a six-figure budget, Art Basel is well worth a visit. The most famous galleries have a booth in the main hall, displaying the most influential works of their most famous artists. Even those who declare themselves to be philistines do not leave so many expressions of superiority blank.

If you want to see the whole official part in peace, you need a day. If you only have a few hours, it’s best to go straight to Art Unlimited. Artwork that has no place in any museum can be seen here: massive video installations, walking worlds, and mechanical masterpieces that take the visitor’s breath away.

Why should you visit Art Basel?

But absolutely: Art is not just an art event, it is also a human event. The earlier the week, the more attractive the crowd. The fair is open to the public from Thursday, and tickets for the exhibition to be held on Wednesday can only be bought by invitation. Worth asking in your circle of friends. Many edition tickets are sent to customers by sponsoring companies and galleries.

Anyone who likes to dress extravagantly has the opportunity to step on the gas without looking silly. Colors are appropriate, patterns can be wildly mixed, functionality is only recommended for shoes. The reluctant art visitor also wears a suit and sneakers, as he has to travel long distances. The weather in Basel can be quite hot. For this reason, most people prefer loafers or sandals. that they quickly escaped when they wanted to stick their feet in a well on the way home.
