Sean Bailey is President of Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture Production, responsible for all live-action productions of The Mouse House. The he now gave insight into his work for a portrait about “The man who re-imagines Disney’s classics for today’s world”. He revealed that he is currently in charge of “more than 50 films” in various stages of development. Another priority is a new Pirates of the Caribbean movie that will reboot the Pirates Of The Caribbean franchise. And a few steps have already been taken:
“We think we have a really good and exciting story that pays homage to the films that preceded it, but also has something new to tell.”Bailey reveals that at least a rough script for Pirates of the Caribbean 6 already appears to exist.
He did not give further details. Producer legend Jerry Bruckheimer revealed a few months ago that the project was being developed with “a younger cast” – though he didn’t further specify this statement.
What about Johnny Depp now?
When asked if Johnny Depp could return as Captain Jack Sparrow despite all the problems and negative press surrounding his person, Bailey replies rather evasively: “At the moment no strings attached” is that of the sent statement, which means something like: “I don’t want to make a decision yet”
Despite this reluctance, some fans of the fallen superstar also find hope: At least Disney isn’t entirely rejecting Depp’s return. So the door seems to be open somehow. Only the future will tell if it stays open.
No major Hollywood studio dared to work with Johnny Depp. Because even though he won multiple points in a US lawsuit against his ex-wife Amber Heard over alleged domestic violence between the two, the allegations are still in the room. In the UK, Depp previously lost a court case against a tabloid magazine over whether he could be called a “woman beater”.
For now, it seems that the studios are waiting to see how the public reacts to Depp and his first films made in Europe. The historical dramaJeanne DuBarry“just celebrated its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival and will be released in German cinemas on June 24, 2023.
The big question is how long Disney can keep a decision on a return for Pirates of the Caribbean 6 open. Contrary to current claims, Bailey and Co. soon they will have to “commit” if they want to get their “good and exciting story” off the ground…
