New varieties of corn, plantain and banana were registered

National Seed Board approved the registration of new commercial varieties of corn, plantain and banana at an extraordinary session held in Divisi.

The new approved varieties are the maize hybrid SA 282 and 9 varieties of Musaceae (plantains and bananas).

Of the latter, 5 plantain cultivars are commercial for cooking and industry, two plantain cultivars correspond to the square type with tolerance to Moko disease produced by Ralstonia solanacearum.

The other two banana species are tolerant to black sigatoka.

researchers Institute for Agricultural Innovation (IDIAP) qDr. Román Gordón and engineer Leonardo Marcelino were in charge of the various tests.

Gordón and Marcelino explained to the members the results of the mentioned materials, which will enter the production systems for the benefit of producers and consumers in the country.

The meeting was chaired by the executive secretary of the National Seed Board, Álvaro A. Castillo, and the president of the board members, José Luis Jorge.

The National Seed Commission has among its objectives to guarantee that the seed or planting material meets the quality requirements, which is why it must regulate its production, processing and commercialization in the country.

You must also approve seed propagation plans, to regulate the import of these and new materials.

In addition, the certification and control processes check whether the farmer has access to quality seeds with which he can significantly increase yields.
