Acodeco checks the weight of canned tuna, sardines and fish

The Directorate for Consumer Protection and Defense of Market Competition (Acodeco) performs tasks of checking the net content of 35 brands of seafood packaged in brands of tuna, grated sardine, fish, pieces of sardine, shellfish

This measure is intended to determine whether product batches comply with the minimum permitted deviations Technical regulation DGNTI-COPANIT 3-421-98, Metrology. Net content of prepackaged products, detailed entity.

The procedure that is Acodeco metrology laboratory It consists of a random selection of brands, removing samples from supermarkets, the size of which will depend on the number of containers on the shelves for sale to the public.

Given that product verification is gravimetric, the samples are transferred to the laboratory, in order to measure the net content of each individual sample, which is reported to the economic entity.

The standard implies compliance with the weight declared on the label, as established in Law 45 of 2007.

Tests applied to 36 product brands last year yielded 24 accepted brands and 12 rejected ones. The rejected stamps retained anomalies in the weight declared on the label. A situation that affected consumers, because these are products that the population often uses to prepare meals at home, especially during Lent and Easter.

The results of the new analysis will be published after the analysis of 35 brands is finished, Acodeco specified.

Recently, Acodeco conducted a diligent analysis of rice mills across the country to rule out possible monopolistic practices.

The Directorate for Consumer Protection and Defense of Market Competition (Acodeco) conducted court proceedings in the facilities of 13 rice mills and the association that brings them together in order to determine whether they exercise an absolute monopoly in the distribution and commercialization of rice throughout the country.

Last year, in procedures carried out by the Bureau of Metrology, 56 brands of national pilado rice were certified, of which only two met the quality parameters.
