Which sectors are chosen by small Argentine entrepreneurs: technology is not among the favorites

When starting your own business, prior knowledge prevails. Services and consulting represent more than 50% of new MSMEs

Entering the world of entrepreneurship is a way to gain independence and greater autonomy in your professional life. In Argentina, according to research conducted by Ipsos, 44% of adults have started at least one business in the past, and 36% have considered it. And, contrary to what it would seem at first glance, the technology sector is not the main item chosen for the company itself, but most Argentine entrepreneurs are professionals who provide their services independently.

If you analyze by category, Services and consulting are preferred when starting a business. Retail stores are in second place, and processing industry and production are in third place, according to an analysis conducted among more than 750,000 registered MSMEs by the electronic invoicing platform Alegra.com.

In this way, it is observed that the desire to break free from corporate life comes, in most cases, together with prior knowledge. Talent is seeking to break through in the consulting and service sectors where Argentina has valuable resources.

More than 50% of the companies created in Argentina belong to the service and consulting category. This means 20% of all Argentine MSMEs are dedicated to personal services, such as hairdressers, beauty salons, cleaning and security services, among others, and 12% to professional services, such as legal, accounting and financial consulting, design and advertising services, among others. Finally, SMEs are also significantly present in other service sectors in Argentina, such as health, education and tourism.

On the other hand, the retail trade sector shows a great growth of entrepreneurs: 30% of MSMEs are dedicated to retail sales. Within the industry, iThe food and beverage subsector is the one with the largest number of companies, with close to 35% of the total. This subsector includes neighborhood stores, local supermarkets, butchers, bakeries, among others. In second and third place are the sub-sector of clothing and footwear and the sub-sector of household products, which represent 25% and 15% of the total number of small and medium-sized enterprises in the country within the industry.

Global trends have led Argentine entrepreneurs to focus their business on these sectors. In addition, it is necessary to take into account that the resources (financial, human, natural, technological) available to small entrepreneurs are crucial when choosing the sector in which they will work”, he points out. Iván Boix, strategic leader of Alegra.com in Argentina.
