Why does it occur and how does it affect absenteeism?

The uncertainty and stress associated with difficult situations can affect employee attendance and productivity, according to a recent PageGroup study.

The report of this company shows that almost 70% of organizations believe that there is a lack of motivation and commitment of workers to some extent the root cause of absenteeism in organizations.

This is emphasized by Ana Patricia Barrios, senior manager of Michael Page Panama short and repeated staff absences can result in a significant reduction in productivity associates who will make it impossible to achieve the company’s goals.

“Absenteeism reduces productivity. Everything grinds to a halt, processes get stuck and projects don’t get delivered,” commented Barrios.

It also emphasizes that absenteeism affects costs and the work environment. Paying overtime on Workers Covering shifts due to lack of other colleagues can cause increased costs for the company.

He adds that if, in addition, an associate constantly has to cover the sick days of other employees, this will result in a toxic work environment and a disrupted work environment.

According to Barrios, normally employees have a greater sense of belonging at work during crises because these are the times when companies can make cuts and when the focus is on top-performing talent so that they are the ones who drive business productivity and competitiveness.

In this regard, he indicated that studies show that 56% of organizations hold management responsible for unwanted absenteeism.

What should be done?
One of the strategies or measures that companies should implement to reduce absenteeism in difficult times is the application of active listening. Listening to co-workers is key to understanding what’s going on with their motivation, what issues or concerns are causing absenteeism, Barrios explained.

“Companies must offer equal opportunities for everyone. One of the major causes of absenteeism is demotivation caused by exceptions or discrimination when it comes to promoting certain talents. You must have a clear career plan that lets everyone know that growth in the company is based on meritocracy.he explained.

Companies must publicize flexibility programs so that employees can choose the form of work that best suits their lifestyle, establishing a work model based on results and productivity rather than hours spent sitting at the workplace.
