Anapor warns of the risks of the TPC with the USA.

The National Association of Pig Breeders of Panama (Anapor) highlighted this week the risk to which the agricultural sector is exposed due to the rapid implementation of the Trade Promotion Agreement with the United States.

In this sense, the group also pointed to the lack of actions, which they requested from the National Government, especially from the Minister of Trade and Industry.

Anapor gave those responsible a proposal based on the rules of international trade, which does not affect what was signed in the TPC and which manages to mitigate the negative impact of that contract on domestic production.

During the X National Pig Congress, annual meeting carried out by the pork industry, the sector demanded clear answers from the Government since there is no time to wait.

The ambassador of the People’s Republic of China was also asked to cooperate so that Panama can export to that large market, which has a bilateral trade relationship of more than 6,000 million dollars.

As an annual event, it offers exchange, innovation and collaboration between industry experts to improve pork production in the country. It is also noted that Panama has been free of classical swine fever for 60 years.

More than 27 companies and institutions participate in the tenth version, which, together with producers, researchers, experts and decision makers from the region, provide new information on production, genetics, management, nutrition, energy efficiency, standards and regulations for pig farming.

Participants also address challenges and opportunities in pig production, as well as innovative trends and technologies to stimulate the growth of the sector, said Víctor Epifanio, spokesperson for Anaporo.

The official opening was attended by Augusto Valderrama, Minister of Agricultural Development, Carlos Salcedo Zaldivar, Minister Adviser for Agricultural Affairs and His Excellency Wei Qiang, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China.

The consumption of pork produced in Panama is increasing 16.5% compared to 2020. This meat, they say in Anapore, is fresher and more nutritious, because it does not travel long distances in the frozen state compared to imported meat.
