The number of Galician households that are difficult or difficult to reach at the end of the month is increasing

Two out of ten cannot afford any additional costs

He 46.4% of Galician households have difficulties making ends meet and 8.92% do so with great difficulty in the second quarter, compared to 44.68% who find it easy or very easy to meet expenses, according to data published this Monday by the Galician Institute of Statistics (IGE). It represents an increase in households that have difficulty or very difficulty making it to the end of the month, both in the three-month variation and in relation to the same period of the previous year.

Compared to the previous quarter, a drop of 1.43 points was recorded Percentage of households that easily or very easily make ends meetan increase of 1.23 points for those struggling to make ends meet and one of 0.2 for households struggling to make it to the end of the month.

Compared to the second quarter of 2022, the percentage of households that easily or very easily make it to the end of the month drops by 6.88 percentage points. The percentage of households that have difficulty making it to the end of the month between the two periods increases by 3.54 points, and households that have difficulty making it by 3.34 points.

Measures

He 22.47% of Galician households could not afford anything more in the last three months, according to the IGE short-term household survey. Expenditures for vacation or travel, dealing with unforeseen events or large purchases, additional food, clothes and shoes, contracting new services for the home, going out to dinner, going to the cinema, etc. are considered additional.

This category also includes the possibility of saving money and working fewer hours or for a household member to allow himself to stop working. 40.45% of Galician households changed their shopping habits by buying white brands, products on sale, etc., in the second quarter of 2023.

This was the most common economic measure used by households in this period to reduce expenses, increase income or pay. In addition, 31.83% of Galician households reduced other common expenses such as clothes and shoes, transport, gas, electricity, etc., except for food.

16.63% of Galician households pay for the main home they live in, 8.91% for a car and 1.97% for a second home. Compared to the same quarter of 2022, the percentage of households paying for residence decreased by 1.30 points.

Confidence

In the second quarter of 2023, the consumer confidence indicator reflects a value of -12.05 points, 8.91 points more compared to the previous quarter.

None of the four partial indicators of the development perspective decreased in this quarter: the unemployment indicator recorded an increase of 13.02 points, followed by the indicator of the economic situation in Galicia, which increased by 11.74 points; the indicator of the ability to save for the future, which increased by 7.53 points, and the indicator of personal financial condition, which increased by 3.34 points.
