Food has always played an important role in the coronation ceremonies of British monarchs. The dishes served at coronation banquets have their own fascinating history, a sign of prestige, wealth or even a symbolic expression of the new monarch’s values.
For example, one of the most generous feasts was in 1821 with Jiří IV. After that, seven tons of meat and more than 1,600 chickens were prepared for the king and his retinue. The bill for such a table, converted into modern money, was more than 20 million pounds sterling.
The coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, which took place on June 2, 1953, on the other hand, was quite economical, because the country had not yet fully recovered from the Second World War and there was still a lot of it. On the feast day, however, the rationing laws were relaxed so that the queen’s subjects could prepare a festive refreshment. A special recipe was created for the coronation itself – coronation chicken. It was a lightly curried chicken with cream that later became a popular sandwich topping.
What is the official coronation recipe prepared for the coronation of Charles III? A vegetarian quiche with organic eggs, spinach, beans and tarragon, created by Royal Chef Mark Flanagan.
