Los Angeles hosted the 95th annual world’s most prestigious film awards. The 2023 Oscars were held at the Dolby Theatre.

The film “Navalny” (Navalny) by the American director Daniel Roer won the coveted statuette in the nomination “Best Documentary Film”. The star-studded evening in Hollywood was attended by relatives of political figures of Alexei Navalny * – wife Julia, daughter Daria and son Zakhar.

The film tells about the politician’s participation in the “Russian March” in 2011 and also covers episodes from his life from the summer of 2020 to January 2021. The film touches on the events when Navalny was hospitalized with signs of poisoning and was treated at a clinic in Germany. The 30-year-old Canadian-born American director described the genre of the tape as a biographical film with elements of a political thriller.

The Russians were not involved in the film – HBO Max and CNN Films participated in the production in cooperation with Fishbowl Films, Raefilm and Cottage M. The project was produced by Diana Becker and Melanie Miller of Raefilm, Shane Boris of Cottage M, Amy Entelis and Courtney Sexton of CNN Movies. The recording details Navalny’s life from waking up from a coma to his arrest. It deliberately refused to show a man in a hospital bed – his wife insisted. Together with the oppositionist himself, Yulia and Daria Navalny also gave interviews.

The film premiered last January at the Sundance Independent Film Festival, and was later shown on American television and streaming platforms. The film won a BAFTA award in the same category.

The politician fell ill on August 20, 2020 on board the plane on the way from Tomsk to Moscow. He first ended up in the Omsk hospital, from where he was transferred to the German Charité clinic. According to the protagonist of the film, the film crew was next to him even at the border control at the airport after returning to Russia.

Alexei Navalny is currently serving his sentence in the strict regime colony No. 6 in Melekhov, Vladimir Region. The total sentence of the politician is nine years.
