“We were forced to perform surgical procedures”: Kostomarov’s attending physician said he could survive 02/16/2023, 09:50

In connection with gangrene, which arose against the background of sepsis, the athlete underwent amputation surgery. Then, due to the sharp deterioration of Roman’s condition, they put him in an artificial coma. The attending physician of the Olympic champion spoke for the first time about what is happening to him.

“At the end of the first day of the patient’s stay in Kommunarka, I and several other specialists dealing with respiratory failure were connected to the treatment of Roman Kostomarov,” explained Sergey Tsarenko. – All the tactics of treatment of Kostomarov, which are currently used, are the only possible ones. Unfortunately, this led to forced surgeries. Treatment tactics are optimal, but like any other, they have their price. There is a clear positive trend in terms of relief (decrease in degree) of respiratory and renal failure. Not all threats have been eliminated yet, but there is a serious chance that the patient will survive.”

Some experts called it a mistake that Kostomarov was taken to the hospital in Kommunarka. Tsarenko assured that it was the right decision, because during the coronavirus pandemic, a lot of experience was gained there in dealing with accompanying diseases. The specialists of this clinic have many times saved patients who needed mechanical ventilation and ECMO. Treatment partner Tatyana Navka is under the control of the Minister of Health Mikhail Murašek, he came to the hospital.

“Several consultations have taken place,” noted Sergey. – I attended six, every day, the situation was critical. At the consultations, collegial tactics are developed, and there was a full understanding of the seriousness of the patient’s condition, the reasons that led to it.

The doctor pointed out that the use of artificial ventilation in the case of such a serious lesion may not help. Therefore, it is necessary to switch to ECMO immediately, which was done. This method is used in combination with artificial pulmonary ventilation.

“By using this kind of treatment, we are creating new problems. Unfortunately, microcirculatory disturbances can develop with ECMO. It usually occurs on the tips of the fingers, toes and sometimes on the ears. And that leads to necrosis. By solving one problem, we create a new one. And this is a constant consideration of the chances that occur in any critical situation, “Kostomarov’s attending physician admitted in an interview with TASS.

The skater was admitted to intensive care with pneumonia on January 10. Roman had both legs amputated last week. Later it became known about the amputation of hands. Together with the athlete is his wife Oksana Domnina. She admitted that even in her nightmares she could not imagine such a thing.
