While many people thought Mendes and Gosling first met on the set of The Place Beyond the Pines, they actually knew each other before! In a rare interview with Film Stage, Mendes confirmed that they were friends before filming in 2012, but soon fell in love after working together.

In the same interview on Movie Scene, Mendes admitted that it was Gosling who helped her land the role in The Place Beyond the Pines and personally asked her to join the project! The actor recommended Romina Mendes for the role because the casting director had trouble finding the right actress for the role. That’s how it all happened.

Remember the line from “La La Land”: “This is Los Angeles, here people worship everything, but they don’t really value anything”? In an interview with Elle UK, Gosling said he borrowed the iconic line from Mendes, who used it quite often in her everyday life.

In an interview with GQ, Gosling admitted that he realized that Mendes is the woman with whom he wants to live his whole life: he thought about children. It happened to him for the first time.
