Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall
Humphrey was married four times! For the fourth and last time, America’s greatest actor married Lauren Bacall. All the Broadway master’s wives were actresses. Humphrey met the future love of his life in 1943 during an audition for director Howard Hawks.
Both claimed the lead roles in Ernest Hemingway’s To Have and Have Not, only Lauren was at the time a little-known Harper’s Bazaar cover model and Bogart a world star with a difficult character and a ring on her finger. Humphrey began to take care of young Lauren very carefully, because at the time he was still married to the sickly jealous Mayo Meto. The lovers were seen on Bogart’s yacht, rehearsing roles together in a cafe and on location. A strong emotional connection was formed between them: Lauren attracted the middle-aged Bogart with sincerity and poise.

Finally, after ending a previous relationship, Humphrey married Bacall, whom he had previously affectionately called Baby. This happened on May 21, 1945, but the marriage did not interfere with the careers of both, and the actors starred together in several other films. In 1949, a son named Stephen was born to them in honor of the hero of their first film work. In 1952, the star couple became parents for the second time: their daughter Leslie was born. They were the greatest couple in the history of cinema: they didn’t compete, they didn’t fight, they just loved each other in front of the whole world.
In 1957, Humphrey died of esophageal cancer, and at his funeral, Lauren lowered a golden pipe into the coffin, recalling that famous line from their first picture: “You know how to whistle, don’t you, Steve? ..” It was after his death on Humphrey Bogart’s Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Catherine Deneuve and Marcello Mastroianni
Catherine Deneuve and Marcello Mastroianni first met in 1970 on the set of Nadine Trintignant’s It Only Happens to Others. It was not love at first sight, the couple’s relationship developed gradually, which was pushed by external circumstances. At the time, both were struggling with a breakup: Marcello had just broken up with actress Faye Dunaway, and Catherine had completed an affair with director Francois Truffaut.
The Franco-Italian story began when the film’s director, Nadine Trintignant, left the star couple alone in an empty apartment to delve deeply into the images of the characters. The couple existed in real life under the same conditions as in the movies: both were isolated from the outside world, completely absorbed in each other’s feelings. After seven days of imprisonment in the name of art, the actors came into the world as completely different people who were able to fall in love not only on the screen, but also in real life.
Mastroianni soon divorced his wife, but Catherine rejected his marriage proposal, preferring to maintain her independence. Both actors had numerous admirers and admirers, but they were passionate about each other despite the constant attention from outside. And although the couple had a daughter, Chiara, it did not calm down the free-spirited Catherine Deneuve.
The beauty left Marcello Mastroianni the way she left her other no less great men: unexpectedly and in the middle of an affair. As the now elderly diva claims, it saved her from the pain of a breakup. The love story of this couple still stirs the hearts of millions of people.
Alain Delon and Romy Schneider
One of the most sought-after sex symbols of the last century became famous for his love adventures with the first beauties. The affair with Romy, an actress of French-German origin, really messed up both of their nerves and went down in history as one of the most sparkling and painful.
It all started with the filming of the movie “Christina”: Delon, still unknown, met twenty-year-old Romy Schneider on the bridge of a plane that flew to Paris. The young beauty at that time already had a group of suitors and wide popularity thanks to her first roles in the cinema, and therefore the relationship of the couple was not at all smooth at first: the rough and conceited Alain Delon tried to conquer the cold and fed Romy with early success. The girl had to cut ties with her family and move to Paris alone. There she began sharing a modest hotel room on the banks of the Seine with a rising film star, the young Delon.
The actors got engaged in March 1959, but their life was turbulent: headstrong Delon envied the success of his chosen one, threw scandals at her, Romy was jealous of his film partners. Their romance ended after Delon’s betrayal with actress Natalie Barthelemy.
Romy Schneider married playwright Harry Mayen. Both marriages on the side did not last long: after filming the movie “Pool”, the feelings between Delon and Schneider flared up again. Alain divorced his wife, threw himself into a series of easy novels, Romy survived the suicide of her husband, the death of her beloved son, fell into alcohol, but still loved Alain Delon. Both maintained a scandalous relationship throughout their lives, unable to break up forever.
The diva died at the age of 43, plagued by depression and suffering from the effects of alcohol abuse and antidepressants. A medical examination confirmed the version about suicide, but the press wrote about death from heart failure. Despondent Alain took three posthumous photographs of his ex-lover, with whom he still hasn’t broken up.
Jane Birkin and Serge Gainsbourg
“Beauty and the Beast” – that’s how contemporaries called their union. Birkin was only 19 when she arrived in Paris and spoke no French. From an early marriage, Jane already had a little daughter, Kate, and she needed to support herself and the child, so she quickly agreed to a role in the movie “Slogan”. The partner in the film was the already famous composer Serge Gainsbourg – a man with a difficult character and the typical manners of a star.
Young Jane initially suffered from incompatibility with Gainsbourg. She even wrote letters to her brother about how unbearable this arrogant Frenchman was. However, on the first night away from work, the couple danced for several hours straight without further ado at a hotel known to Gainsbourg’s ladies. From that day on, the beautiful Jane and the charismatic Frenchman became inseparable.
Their romance was accompanied by endless shocking and scandalous antics: once Serge, suspecting his beloved of treason, began rummaging through her purse, for which he received a custard cake directly in the face. After a well-aimed throw, Jane broke free and ran headlong down Boulevard Saint-Germain, jumping into the Seine as she went. The actress, who emerged from the water in a drenched Yves Saint Laurent dress, took her beau’s hand and the two calmly headed home.
There were many such stories on the account of the Birkin-Gainsbourg couple, because they both had an indomitable nature and overzealousness. Soon the couple had a daughter, Charlotte, who became the greatest actress of our time. But after 12 years of dating, Jane left Serge, tired of his drinking and constant showdowns.
Surprisingly, the two maintained a close friendship and creative understanding, despite Jane Birkin’s second marriage. Serge died in 1991, but until the end of his days he did not lose contact with his former lover, who forever remained his greatest love. Their joint musical hit “Je t’aime… Moi Non Plus”, recorded in 1969, is still one of the most sensual love songs.
The legendary musician of the most popular band of the last century and the avant-garde artist lived together for 14 years. At the time of their fateful acquaintance, John Lennon was only 26 years old and Yoko Ono was 33. The musician visited her London exhibition for the first time, but the incomprehensible art did not arouse understanding or joy in him. John was a family man: his wife Cynthia and their young son were waiting for him at home every day. However, the musician’s family did not become an obstacle to the development of his romance with the artist.
After meeting with Lennon, Yoko Ono immediately began to send him strange messages, over which the star’s wife narrowed her eyes, because the popular John had a lot of fans, extravagant antics were not rare. But Youko wasn’t about to back down and John quickly gave up.
The marriage to Cynthia was annulled and John Lennon and Yoko Ono married, completely absorbed in each other. The honeymoon of the newlyweds took place in a horizontal position: the lovers practically did not leave the room of the Amsterdam Hilton, which clearly confirmed John’s famous motto “Make love, not war.” There was no end to the paparazzi: the public was outraged by the stormy romance of two creative personalities, but it seemed that the spouses themselves did not notice anything around. Their love was the beginning of the end for The Beatles: the guys in the group hated Yoko, believing that she was deliberately destroying what Lennon had created before her.
In 1973, John changed Ono, but was forgiven, and this again convinced him of the ideality of the chosen one. The couple soon had a son, Sean, but the family broke up in 1980 after the death of John, who was shot by a distraught fan. Many blame Yoko for his death, she irrevocably bewitched him more than music could. The artist responds to all attacks with her unshakable style: “We just loved each other. Everything else is pop history.”
Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love
Kurt and Courtney met in 1990, when Nirvana had already won the love of thousands of listeners around the world. Courtney also started studying music and singing at that time and put together her own band. In addition, she dreamed of meeting a young musician, despite his tremendous popularity and legions of many fans.
They met at the club a few minutes before Nirvana’s performance. According to eyewitnesses, Courtney, who wanted the stubborn soloist to remember her, threw a caustic phrase that sparked a fight. After this nasty encounter, the two crossed paths again a year later at a concert in Los Angeles. Due to a series of endless tours, it was not at all easy for the gloomy star and the girl with a rebellious spirit to see each other alone, but the spark ran literally at first sight.
Their story became the most famous novel of the twentieth century. Talented Kurt and his eccentric fiancée unfortunately became addicted not only to each other, but also to drugs, which became the leitmotif of their life together. Scandals and stormy reconciliation succeeded each other, the newlyweds lived as if on a dustpan of their own feelings.
In 1992, the couple had a daughter, Francis, and Kurt proved to be an unusually caring father. However, depression associated with years of drug use hastened the death of the talented musician. In 1994, an electrician discovered Kurt Cobain’s body. The blond idol of millions committed suicide with a hunting rifle, but the shadow of suspicion fell on Courtney for the premeditated murder of her husband. Shortly before Kurt’s death, the couple frequently argued over money and endless attempts to get off the needle.
No one knows what really happened. “I feel happier now than ever before. I finally found a person who is exactly like me. And it doesn’t matter who it is – man, woman, hermaphrodite or donkey. The main thing is that we fit each other, “said Kurt Cobain about his most beloved woman Courtney Love during his life.
