Can this van set the Pikes Peak hillclimb record?
Well, Van… Not many boxes of Hello Fresh fit in the back of the Ford SuperVan 4. It’s a continuation of Ford’s tradition of spooning insane engines into the Transit. The electric SuperVan 4 has no less than 2000 hp.
The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is a mountain race that has been around for over a hundred years. It used to be partly unpaved – watch the legendary film Climb Dance here – now the 20-kilometer route is paved.
Pikes Peak winner Romain Dumas at the wheel
The event will take place on June 25th in the western US state of Colorado. Ford will start with the SuperVan 4, driven by Pikes Peak specialist Romain Dumas.
The 45-year-old Frenchman has won the Fia World Endurance Championship once, the 24 Hours of Le Mans three times, the Fia R-GT Cup once and Pikes Peak four times.
In fact, Dumas has the absolute track record to his name. In 2018 he drove the Volkswagen ID.R to the top at 4302 meters in just 7:57.148 minutes. The Pikes Peak course has 156 turns.
Ford Model T as early as 1916 at the Pikes Peak hill climb
The race was first held in 1916. Ford also took part with a Model T that took 28 minutes and 3 seconds to complete.
SuperVan 4 with four electric motors with 2000 hp
The Ford SuperVan 4 is powered by four electric motors, which together produce an output of 2000 hp. The crazy “van” can only travel 35 kilometers with its 50 kWh battery pack. Enough for one race.
Last year the SuperVan 4 took part in the hill climb at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. There, the public could experience the insane sprinting power of the device: from a standing start to 100 km/h in less than 2 seconds.
Ford says the SuperVan 4 is basically a run-of-the-mill E-Transit, but we don’t believe much of it. Maybe it’s true, but then the base is very, very small. However, the SuperVan 4 has a detachable trailer hitch, with which it can actually tow 2250 kilos.
