Gasoline and diesel cars are finally forbidden!
The European Parliament has approved the ban on petrol and diesel cars from 2035. Parliament voted 340 in favor, 279 against and 21 abstentions to say goodbye to petrol cars.
The 27 EU countries have previously approved the proposal. Now that the European Parliament has decided, it is final.
Gasoline and diesel cars are finally banned
In addition to petrol and diesel cars, light commercial vehicles with petrol engines will also be banned from 2035. The ban means no new cars that run on fossil fuels can be sold.
In addition, the CO2 emissions of new cars must be reduced by 55 percent by 2030 compared to 2021. A reduction of 50 percent applies to vans by 2030. A new method is also being developed to measure the CO2 emissions over the entire life cycle of a vehicle
The new legislation is part of a “Fit for 55” package from the European Commission. The goal is to be completely climate-neutral by 2050. By 2030, greenhouse gas emissions in the European Union must be reduced by 55 percent.
criticism
Although the European Union approves the plans, there are also many opponents of the ban on petrol and diesel cars. At the Paris Motor Show, Autovisie spoke to Uwe Hochgeschurtz, CEO of Stellantis in Europe. He is skeptical about the feasibility of the plan. “The production costs of an electric vehicle are on average 10,000 euros higher than those of a conventional car. (…) Europe must ensure that almost everyone can afford an electric car by 2035.” How and whether this is possible remains to be seen.
The fact is that only a very small proportion of cars in the Netherlands are fully electric. After petrol and diesel cars are finally banned, the EV share is likely to increase sharply.
