BMW recalls more than 14,000 electric cars due to loss of performance

BMW is recalling 14,086 electric cars in the US because they may lose performance. This can happen while driving.

The recall applies to BMW’s i4, i7 and iX. Overall, 90 percent of all electric vehicles in the US are being recalled.

Problems with the battery software of electric cars

The problem lies in the battery software of BMW electric cars. Due to the error in the software, there may be a power outage while driving or the car may even fail completely.

Luckily, there’s already a solution to the problem—and that solution is simple, too. With an update, the BMWs no longer fail. The update takes about 60 minutes.

BMW says it discovered the problems in the software itself after a quality check. Fortunately, no accidents occurred due to the software bug.

No known recall in the Netherlands

Owners can use the American NHTSA document to check for themselves whether their car also needs an update. It is still unclear whether Dutch cars also suffer from this problem. Although this BMW recall is of a large scale, the brand has not had an extremely large number of recalls in the Netherlands over the past year.

The Bavarian car brand had a total of 11 recall campaigns in the Netherlands in 2022. This is much less than other manufacturers, for example Stellantis. They had 64 in our country last year.

On the track with the BMW i4 and 440i Gran Coupé
