Porsche boss: “We are considering more 70s/80s and off-road 911s”

Porsche is considering building more 1970s/1980s and off-road 911s. That’s what CEO Oliver Blume says in an interview with Car Magazine.

The idea of ​​making retro models came from the world of sports shoes, says Blume. “We saw that retro shoes with designs from the 1970s and 1980s were coming onto the market, so we thought: Maybe Porsche can do the same.”

“The first and second generations of the 911 Sport Classic go back to the 1950s and 1960s,” he explains. “We’re thinking about releasing models inspired by the 1970s and 1980s.”

The Porsche 911 Dakar

Last year, Porsche showed the 911 Dakar, a 911 as a real off-roader. The car is a nod to the eighties. The brand won the Paris-Dakar Rally twice: in 1984 with the 911 (officially: 953) and in 1986 with the 959. Only 2,500 examples of the special 911 Dakar will be built, but it must not be limited to a special version.

Porsche has something to celebrate

“Few brands are able to successfully combine the past with the present with modern technology, but Porsche can do it,” said Blume. “So we thought: ‘Why don’t we add an off-road variant to our sporty GT models and historic 911s?’ We’ll see if the 911 Dakar is as successful as we expect. And then there can be even more. The door is now open.”

More off-road and 70s/80s models?

Porsche is celebrating three anniversaries in 2023: the 60th birthday of the 911, the 75th birthday of the brand and the 80th birthday of Wolfgang Porsche. When asked if Porsche is releasing products for these occasions, Blume replies, “You can expect that, of course!” So it looks like we’re going to see more off-road and 1970s/1980s versions of the 911. And if that coincides with the anniversaries, then this year!
