Fat leftovers from oliebollen? You can ride it!

Fat leftovers from oliebollen? You can ride it!

It’s New Year’s, which means you’ve eaten donuts, drank champagne and shot fireworks into the sky. Did you bake oil balls yourself? Then you can go back to work on January 2 with this cooking fat.

Even if after reading this article you may not want to have any frying fat in your car, it is important that you at least hand in the used frying fat to a collection point. Both in nature and through your sink, it can have unpleasant consequences.

Only diesel cars can potentially run on vegetable oil.

In many cases, driving on frying fat is not a good idea

The bad news first: Frying oil can also have bad consequences in the car. Because the viscosity (viscosity) of the frying fat you’ve used in your oil balls is different than diesel, it can cause engines to start poorly, deliver less power, and even have a shorter lifespan. Parts can become clogged with the “thicker” oil. In addition, the mixture does not burn as optimally as diesel. Damage to the fuel system is also possible.

If you drive a modern diesel, which still has a considerable value, then of course you don’t fill up with frying oil. In addition, the technology of modern diesels is simply not suitable for frying fat.

Older diesels can handle your old oil from oliebollen better

However, the technology of older diesel is more resistant to the thicker oil. If you want to run completely on vegetable oil, you need to adjust spark plugs, injectors, fuel lines and fuel pump. The liquid must also be preheated. Mixing with regular diesel soon seems easy. In the Netherlands there are several owners of old diesels who fill up with about 20 percent frying oil. You must first filter the oliebol pieces from the vegetable oil.

Driving on frying oil is illegal

Suppose you have an old cheap diesel and you want to drive part of it on vegetable oil? Then this is officially not allowed. There is no excise duty on the fuel and driving on frying fat can result in a fine. But how do the police find out? Quite simply, the exhaust fumes from your exhaust smell like what you ate on New Year’s Eve: Oliebollen. So driving on the used things is possible, but you have to want to..
