Why you are not allowed on the Utrecht Lekdijk with the De Tomaso P900

Why you are not allowed on the Utrecht Lekdijk with the De Tomaso P900

Every spring, residents of the Lekdijk in Utrecht suffer from motorcyclists making a huge noise with their aftermarket exhausts. There is even a ban on certain pieces. For motorcycles, but also for the De Tomaso P900.

Admittedly, these two things have nothing to do with each other. The motorcycles are road legal, but simply not allowed on the Lekdijk during a certain period of time. The De Tomaso is not allowed on public roads in the Netherlands at all. And this is mainly due to its energy source.

The Tomaso P900 is a toy

The DeTomaso P900 is a race track toy for the super rich. Only 18 examples will be built, each with a starting price of 3 million euros.

It clearly resembles the street-legal P72, but has an engine on board that immediately disqualifies it from the RDW.

Atmospheric V10 from a Formula 1 car

If you want to drive the P900 quickly, order the version with V10. It’s not the power source from the Porsche Carrera GT, Lexus LFA, BMW M5 E60 or Lamborghini Huracán, but a 750 hp racing block from the Benetton B197 Formula 1 car. So you can imagine the sound: It’s deafening.

New V12 revs up to 12,300 rpm

If you are patient you can check the V12 option on De Tomaso’s order list. The P900 will then get a new twelve-cylinder, which is still in development and will be around for a while.

The naturally aspirated engine comes from the German motorsport company Capricorn, delivers 900 hp and has a speed limit of 12,300 rpm. It transmits its power to the rear wheels via a sequential gearbox.

Bizarre 1 to 1 horsepower to weight ratio

The performance of the P900 is not yet known. But the fact that the racing car produces 900 hp with a car weight of 900 kilos promises a lot. After all, the power-to-weight ratio is 1 to 1. So we figured all of the P900s would have been sold already, as is often the case with Ferrari or Porsche. But no, De Tomaso reports that there are still production facilities.
