Charging an electric car? The price differences per community are enormous

If you drive an electric car but don’t have charging options at home, you probably rely on public charging stations. And the fee rates for this seem to vary enormously depending on the municipality.

According to a study by Independer, you pay an average of 36 cents per kWh for public charging. However, the tariffs vary so much depending on the municipality that in one you pay 2.5 times as much as in another.

Electric car in Zeeland

It is currently least profitable in Zeeland, where public charging costs an average of 47 cents per kWh. This amount is about 30 percent higher than in the rest of the Netherlands.

This is followed by Friesland, Utrecht, Flevoland, North Brabant and South Holland with an average of 38 cents per kWh. North Holland is the cheapest at 33 cents per kWh.

Frisian community

At the municipal level, there are larger outliers with a rate of 63 cents per kWh in southwest Fryslân. The municipality of Ameland is the cheapest at 24 cents per kWh.

Electric car in the garage

According to Joris Kerkhof from Independer, the type of parking space also plays a big role. “Figures show that on average you can charge your car more cheaply in parking garages than on the street.”

“However, keep in mind that parking fees in garages are often slightly higher than on the street. To know whether it is actually cheaper to charge in the parking garage, you have to weigh both costs against each other.”
