In pictures: the development of the new Renault 5
Renault has drawn the curtain on the new 5 Series. Many people seem to like the design. There are now more than 50,000 potential buyers on the waiting list. Autovisie deals with the development of the design.
In these articles we take a look at the design evolution of the new electric car and see what remains of the first concept model.
The classic Renault 5
The origins of the new 5 go back more than 40 years. The first generation of the small hatchback model came onto the market in 1972.
In 1984 the R5 was replaced by a second generation. Production of this model stopped in 1996.
The new Renault 5 e-tech
We won’t hear about the Renault 5 again until much later, in January 2021. However, the idea had been on the table for years. This is what chief designer Laurens van den Acker told Autovisie.
Nevertheless, the study model of the 5 was developed in a few months. It also looks very similar to the production model.
It took another two years before we knew more than 5.
A preview
Readers of Autovisie Magazine were able to see a preview of the actual production model as early as summer 2023. We took a look at the pre-series factory in the Technocentre, Renault’s gigantic research center.
From the factory tour we knew that the LED turn signal on the hood would actually go into production and that the Renault 5 comes with disc brakes and 18-inch wheels all around. We could also conclude that the final production model is very similar to the concept model.
