Hydrogen the solution? This V8 SUV is zero-emission

Many car manufacturers believe that electric driving is the future. However, there are also brands that still believe in hydrogen. This also applies to NamX, which wants to bring an SUV with a V8 onto the market with HUV.

No emissions is not entirely true. The production and distribution of hydrogen continues to emit CO2. However, only water comes out of the NamX’s exhaust.

Hydrogen SUV

The NamX HUV is different from the Hyundai Nexo or the Toyota Mirai. These cars are electric. They are equipped with a fuel cell that converts the hydrogen into electricity and water. According to many, this is the most efficient way to run on hydrogen. The HUV is therefore less efficient than the Mirai.

A big V8

Toyota, for example, has also experimented with burning hydrogen before. This is (still) less efficient, but it has a big advantage. It sounds like a real gasoline engine! In the video below you can see the Toyota GR Corolla with a 1.6 liter three-cylinder hydrogen engine.

Undoubtedly, the 6.2-liter V8 from the French-Moroccan manufacturer NamX will also sound good. The drive power is 300 hp or 550 hp. The lowest power version has rear-wheel drive, the 550 hp version has all-wheel drive. With the most powerful drive, the hydrogen SUV sprints from 0 to 100 in 4.3 seconds.

With both powertrains you can drive 800 kilometers on 8 kilos of “fuel”. Then all capsules in the back of the car must be full. According to NamX, the advantage of these capsules is that they can be exchanged at a hydrogen filling station, just like Nio does with batteries. This is intended to prevent hydrogen filling stations, which can refuel a limited number of cars per day, from running out of fuel.

How much does a hydrogen car cost?

NamX plans to deliver the first HUVs in the fourth quarter of 2026. The starting price is 75,000 euros. The more powerful version will cost 95,000 euros.
