In these countries, car insurance does not pay if you drive without winter tires

It is cold and the first wet snow has now fallen. This means that it is better to have all-season or winter tires on your car. In fact, you must have suitable tires in these neighboring countries, otherwise you may have problems with your car insurance.

Different rules apply in every country. Before you go on vacation to another country or buy gas and groceries in one of our neighboring countries, you should carefully check that you have the right tires.

There may be problems with insurance in these countries

Your winter tires must also be of good quality. Read these tips before you go. Otherwise, your insurance may not cover everything in the event of an accident.

1. Netherlands

If you have decided not to buy all-season or winter tires, your car is insured in the Netherlands. Provided, of course, that your tires meet the other standard requirements.

2. Belgium

There is also no requirement to have winter tires in Belgium. This means you won’t have any problems with your insurance if you drive with summer tires in winter near our southern neighbors.

3. Germany

That’s different in Germany. Driving with winter tires is mandatory in winter conditions.

Please note that the use of all-season rubber is also restricted in Germany. From September 30, 2024, you may no longer use all-season tires in winter conditions.

Anyone who drives on German roads in winter with summer or all-season tires after September 30, 2024 will not only have to expect a fine of 60 euros and a penalty point on their driving license. There can also be problems with your insurance in the event of an accident.

The other party’s German insurance company can hold you (partially) liable for damages, even if you are not at fault. Are you going to Germany in winter? Then make sure you have winter tires.
