Tire pressure: How much should you inflate (winter) tires?
It’s winter and that means winter tires are being fitted again. It’s important that they have the correct tire pressure, just like your summer wheels. But how do you know if your tires are adequately inflated?
Inflating car tires is very important. It ensures that the tire works properly. This means you always have enough grip, as long as the tread is still good enough. A properly inflated tire ensures lower fuel consumption and longer tire life.
Inflate the tire
It is therefore important that your tires have the correct tire pressure. With an emphasis on “the right one,” because excessive tire pressure increases the risk of a tire blowout.
But what is the correct tire pressure? This varies depending on the car. You can find the tire pressure in the owner’s manual and often behind the fuel filler flap or on the inside of the door of your car. In general, tire pressure is between 2.0 and 3.0 bar.
Winter tires have the same tire pressure as summer tires. If outside temperatures are above 7 degrees, it is recommended to increase the pressure by 0.2 bar. When measuring the voltage, make sure that you have driven a maximum of 5 kilometers or 15 minutes.
Check tire pressure
The ANWB recommends checking tire pressure every month and inflating the tire if necessary. Don’t forget the spare tire on the pumps if you have one in your car. Of course, if you need the spare tire in an emergency, you want to make sure there is enough air in the tire.
