This is the oldest electric car in the Netherlands

Electric cars are becoming more common on the roads, but the majority of cars still have a gasoline engine. Electric vehicles are still new to many. You will be surprised to know that the oldest electric car has been in the Netherlands since 1991.

The very first electric vehicles were developed in the 19th century and there are several inventors who contributed to the early development of electric vehicles. There are different opinions about which inventor was the very first.

Looking for the oldest electric car in the Netherlands

There is less doubt about which is the oldest electric car with a license plate in the Netherlands. At least if we ignore the restomods for a moment. We look in the RDW database and find the Kewet El Jet. The car is 32 years old and had a new owner in 2005.

But what kind of electric car is the Kewet EL JET? The car was built by the Danish Kewet A/S. The brand produced a total of six models. The Dutch registered car is one of the very first Kewet cars to roll off the assembly line.

The first two models are equipped with a 5 kW engine coupled to a four-speed manual transmission.

The range is only 50 to 80 kilometers due to its 48-volt battery. However, such a small battery also has an advantage. The oldest electric car in the Netherlands weighs just 880 kilograms. Braked and unbraked, it can tow 300 kilograms.

Buy a Kewet El Jet

It is not known where the oldest electric car in the Netherlands is and whether it still works. A Kewet El Jet is for sale on the American sales platform Criagslist for $2,100. The car probably no longer works as it should.

It’s a fun project though. After all, there are only a few El Jets, although the exact production number of the electric car is unknown.
