This production version of the McMurtry Spéirling also sucks
And by that we don’t mean he’ll taunt you or walk around your house with a Dyson. No, the McMurtry Spéirling literally sucks the air out from under it. We saw that at the Goodwood Festival of Speed last year.
The McMurtry Spéirling was officially still a prototype at the time. It is now known that the remarkable sports car will go into series production. It is powered by two electric motors on the rear axle, which together deliver 1013 hp, and weighs less than 1000 kilograms.
McMurtry Spéirling at the Goodwood Hill Climb
In 2022 he put in an insane time at the Goodwood Hill Climb. The McMurtry took off in just 39 seconds. It looked like someone was fast forwarding with a remote control.
Two fans for vacuum generation
What is remarkable about the Spéirling is its way of creating downward pressure. He uses two fans to extract the air from under his car and creates a kind of vacuum there. For example, even when stationary, it is pushed to the ground with 2000 kilos of downforce.
The fans aren’t very quiet, as heard at last year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed. They produce a noise of 120 decibels. The equivalent of an airplane engine running at full throttle.
Intended for track use
Incidentally, the McMurtry, which costs almost a million euros, is not allowed to be driven on public roads. It is intended for use on the race track, where it can absorb up to 3 g of lateral forces when cornering. In other words: triple gravity. An F-16 of the Royal Netherlands Air Force reaches a maximum of 9g.
At 100 km/h the fastest production car in the world
With a time of 1.4 seconds from 0 to 100 km/h, the McMurtry Spéirling is the fastest accelerating production car of all time. After just 5 seconds, the car, which is only 3.4 meters long, reaches a speed of 240 km/h. Its top speed would be over 320 km/h.
Despite all this violence, the Spéirling still has a reasonably good electric range. With its 60 kWh battery, it can cover more than 480 kilometers according to the WLTP, but then you shouldn’t keep trying to get close to its acceleration record.
Construction of the first customer cars will begin in 2024
Construction of the first customer cars will begin next year. McMurtry has announced that there will be a maximum of 100 copies. And that’s a million euros…
