But negotiations in the West are impossible: Putin would now rather achieve his goals in Ukraine through talks than through military means

The words no longer reflect the irrepressible will to win that Russian war leader Vladimir Putin (70) showed after the start of his ‘special military operation’ in Ukraine. On the contrary: Russia has always wanted to negotiate, but the war has spread, complains Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov (55). The West is waging a “joint war against Russia”.

Putin remains open to any contact that would make it possible to achieve the goals of the special operation by peaceful means, the Kremlin spokesman said in the program “Moscow. The Kremlin. Putin” on state broadcaster Rossiya 1. But the West is blocking any attempts by Moscow to come to a solution. The show will air on Sunday evening. Interviewer Pavel Zarubin previously posted an excerpt on Telegram. The Kremlin has never communicated the unfortunate situation in Ukraine so clearly.

“Putin is open to any contact”

“President Putin was, is and is open to any contact to achieve our goals by means other than a special military operation,” says Peskov. The negotiated route would even be preferable: “If possible, preferable.” Western leaders “should be aware of this”.

By this “readiness”, Peskov is referring to a planned peace summit that will take place before the NATO summit in mid-July, not counting Moscow. Peskov specifically highlighted French President Emmanuel Macron (45), who is hosting the peace summit in Ukraine.

Peace summit without Moscow?

Ukraine and its allies are planning the peace summit in Paris, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal. The meeting is for countries that have sided with Russia or have refused to comment on the war. Ukraine’s 10-point peace plan should be revised in Paris to make it more acceptable to other world powers such as India, Brazil, Saudi Arabia and China.

“Everyone is welcome, but not Russians,” the Wall Street Journal quoted a senior European diplomat as saying of the summit’s planning.

Peskov emphasizes that Moscow prefers alternative solutions to the problem, but that Western countries leave Russia no other choice. “The countries of the collective West are currently leaving Russia and have no other way out,” Putin’s confidant said. “Now Ukraine is indeed an instrument of the conflict. The conflict has really deepened, the collective West is waging a common war against our country.”

Criticism of the war is also growing in Russia

This was not how the Kremlin had envisioned the course of the military operation. Criticism in our own country is growing accordingly. Moscow’s troops could not achieve military success against the resistance of the Ukrainian forces, prominent MP Konstantin Zatulin (64) of the ruling United Russia party complained at a conference on the topic “Which Ukraine do we need?”.

Zatulin spoke about Moscow’s failures and mistakes. The “special military operation” should have been called a “war” from the start, Zatulin said. It was not just a misjudgment that the war could be won in a few days. None of the Kremlin’s war objectives had been achieved. Neither demilitarization nor neutrality nor better protection of the people of Donbass had been achieved. “In which of the points did we get a result?” asked Zatulin rhetorically. “Not in one.”
