If you want to know at birth how smart the child will be, you don’t have to wait for the school rankings. German scientists from the Ruhr University in Bochum (D) show with a new study how intelligence can be predicted at birth.
These two criteria are particularly important, as “Bild” writes.
The birth weight of the babies plays an important role. Because: if the weight is particularly low, such as with a premature birth, the child is more likely to have problems with his mental development later on. The size of the head also plays a role.
The study looked at the relationship between body weight and head circumference in order to predict later development. A total of 5301 infants, including 571 preterm infants, were examined shortly after birth. In addition, small children with an average age of four years were examined and subjected to an IQ test, among other things.
“These results enable early intervention and support strategies to promote school achievement and educational success later in life,” explains Dr. Arne Jensen in a press release.
In addition, children can be optimally supported at a young age. This can have a positive effect on their level of education and overall health. Mental health conditions such as hyperactivity or attention deficit disorders can also be treated at an early stage. (lia)
