Iran has announced a hypersonic missile developed in the country that would be superior even to Russia’s Kinshall models. This is reported by the Iranian news agency IRNA, citing senior military commander Amir-Ali Hajizadeh.
The new missile would have already passed initial tests and will soon be presented to the public, said Revolutionary Guards air force commander Hajizadeh. The rocket should therefore reach a speed of 12 to 13 Mach (14,700 to 16,000 km/h). You should also be able to fly outside the Earth’s atmosphere. Hajizadeh said the new weapon could evade all defense systems. The information cannot be independently confirmed.
The Russian Kinzhal and Tsirkon missiles, which are among the fastest weapons of this type to date, reach Mach 8 to 12. The US also has a hypersonic missile. She could reach Mach 17 and is shot down by a transporter. Their range would be about 2,800 kilometers.
Iran had previously introduced another missile: Kheibar’s model would have a range of 2,000 kilometers and could carry ammunition weighing up to 1.5 tons.
The name refers to the ancient city of Kheibar in modern-day Saudi Arabia, known for a seventh-century battle. According to legend, the army of the Prophet Muhammad at that time brutally captured an oasis of Jewish inhabitants.
Hypersonic missiles are special because they reach very high speeds when launched. They can also be shot down by aircraft, so they cannot be detected on radar images of known launch pads. The Russian model Kinzhal can also be equipped with a nuclear warhead. The high speed also makes it difficult for the air defense to detect incoming missiles in time. However, there are reports that Ukraine may have recently hit a Kinzhal missile – probably with a Western Patriot system.
According to Inra, Iran emphasizes that it only wants to use the newly developed weapons for national defense. However, it is already known that Tehran has supplied its Shahed drones to Russia. Bayerischer Rundfunk reported that missiles could soon follow. “Should it come to that, there could be a shift in forces in the war in Ukraine. Because the Iranian missiles are now extremely accurate,” Munich missile expert Markus Schiller told the BR.
With the Iranian missiles, another player would enter the field: China. Beijing is providing “secret military support” to Iran’s missile program, China expert Angela Stanzel of Berlin’s “Foundation for Science and Politics” told BR. The Beijing government allows such transactions because they serve China’s foreign policy interests, Stanzel said in an interview with Bavarian Radio.
