The AKP lost 27 more seats and now has 268 seats. Four of its deputies belong to the Kurdish Islamist party Hüda Par, which first entered parliament through the AKP’s list. Together with the deputies of the Islamist party Yeniden Refah and the ultra-nationalist MHP, Erdogan’s supporters have 323 of a total of 600 seats. They failed to get the two-thirds majority needed for a constitutional amendment.
The imprisoned lawyer Can Atalay was also elected. He was sentenced to 18 years in prison in 2022 in connection with the 2013 Gezi anti-government protests and is now campaigning for the Turkish Workers’ Party in Hatay province. Atalay can become a member of parliament as long as his verdict is not final, his lawyer Bülent Akbay said. The release was requested but not yet finalized. Atalay was on trial in the same process as culture promoter Osman Kavala. The process has been criticized as politically motivated. (SDA)
