At least 70 dead and 350 injured in a collision between two trains in India

Authorities fear that several passengers were trapped in the confusion of the train

At least 70 people died and another 350 were injured when a passenger train collided with several derailed carriages in an earlier incident in the eastern Indian state of Odisha. As Odisha Chief Secretary Pradeep Jena reported, authorities feared that several passengers were trapped in the train mess, according to information from the Indian news channel NDTV.

The Coromandel Express, which covered the route from Calcutta to Chennai, ended by crashing into the jumped wagons of another railway which was going from Bengaluru to Calcutta, Railway Ministry spokesperson Amitabh Sharma said. Currently, more than a hundred National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) personnel have already reached the slip zone, around Balasore town, in search of trapped passengers.

The Chief Minister of the neighboring state of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, confirmed on her Twitter that the authorities are already monitoring the situation, in the absence of precise information about the condition of the injured. In fact, India’s Railway Minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw, reported that he will travel to Odisha to see first-hand the situation after the tragic accident. Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik will also be present.

The reaction of the authorities

After learning the news, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed regret for the accident and sent a message of encouragement to the families of the victims. “The rescue operation at the accident site is underway”it says on the official Twitter profile.

Indian President Draupadi Murmu joined Prime Minister Modi’s condolences. “My heart goes out to the bereaved families. I pray for the success of the rescue operations and the speedy recovery of the injured.”said the Indian head of state.
