Air transport: Three EU countries are calling for stricter rules for private jets

Private aircraft are therefore rightly criticized, according to a letter from the ministries of the environment, transport and infrastructure of the three countries to the EU Commission. In the letter, which is available to the German press agency, they call on the Brussels authorities to “draw more attention to this topic and, in particular, to explore the possibility of more regulation of private jet travel”.

“Private jet flights are a hobby of the super rich. But it cannot be that we all pay for it,” said Austrian Climate Protection Minister Leonore Gewessler. “Anyone who damages our climate must also make an honest contribution. Because we all bear the consequences of these luxury trips.”

The number of private flights in the EU has increased again in recent years. According to an analysis published at the end of March by research institute CE Delft, the number of private flights in Europe increased by 64 percent to 572,806 last year.

According to the European Parliament, civil aviation is responsible for 13.4 percent of CO2 emissions in the EU transport sector. Less climate-damaging flying will also be discussed at the meeting of the EU transport ministers in Luxembourg next Thursday.
