The former hat factory in the Surry Hills district, which fell victim to the flames on Thursday, sometimes found shelter for fifteen homeless people, the Australian news agency AAP reported on Tuesday after reference from the authorities. There has been no trace of two of them since the fire. The factory had been empty for years and would soon be converted into a hotel at a cost of tens of millions of Australian dollars.
About 100 residents from neighboring buildings are still unable to return to their apartments for safety reasons. Meanwhile, demolition work on the remaining parts of the factory, built in 1912, should begin on Tuesday, New South Wales police said. In addition, huge amounts of rubble had to be cleared because the roof and parts of the facade had collapsed.
The cause of the fire is still unclear. However, four young people reported to the police, who apparently were in the building shortly before the fire broke out. It is not known to what extent they were involved. “No charges have been filed so far,” police said.
Surry Hills is a neighborhood in the Australian metropolis that is also popular with tourists. Plumes of black smoke from the flaming inferno could be seen almost everywhere in the city last week. It took hours before the fire was reasonably under control.
