She has been dead for four years: tens of thousands make a pilgrimage to this immortal nun

Her body does not decompose: Sister Wilhelmine Lancaster in Missouri.

Tens of thousands are currently making a pilgrimage to Sister Wilhelmina, who want to see and touch the nun. Although she’s been dead for four years.

Wilhelmina Lancaster died in 2019 at the age of 95 in a rural monastery in the US state of Missouri. She is one of the founders of the monastery. So far, of course. Well, four years after her death she was – as is customary for female foundresses – exhumed to be taken to her final resting place in a convent chapel.

Then came the big surprise.

When the monastery dug the coffin out of the ground, they found not only bones inside, but an almost completely intact corpse. This despite the fact that he was not embalmed and the coffin had a crack through which moisture had penetrated.

At the excavation, the sisters had expected skeletal remains weighing about 10 pounds, but instead they lifted a body that weighed “between 80 and 90 pounds,” the abbess said.

Now her body must be placed in a glass case

Now the excitement is great. As the “Mirror” writes, in Catholicism bodies that do not defy the process of decomposition are considered “incorruptible”. Now tens of thousands of people flock to the monastery to see and touch the nun.

The nun’s body was now covered in a protective wax. Wilhelmina Lancaster will soon be on display in a display case.

“It’s a Real Miracle”

But scientifically speaking, Sister Wilhelmina’s intact corpse is probably not that spectacular. Human remains decay at different rates due to different factors, according to Rebecca George, an associate professor of anthropology at Western Carolina University in North Carolina. Not decomposing even years later is not that rare.

There is no reason for believers not to be influenced. Visitor Rita Cospelich told a local TV station: “When I entered the monastery, I felt like I felt the presence of God. It’s a real miracle. I really think so.” (new)
