Tennis star Sloane Stephens has complained about racist comments online against her at the French Open. After her two-set win in the first round of the Grand Slam tournament against Karolina Pliskova, the American said:
And further: “It never stopped. In any case, it has only gotten worse,” said the 2017 US Open winner.
Stephens went on to say that even the FBI is investigating some of the things said to her on the Internet. It was “really serious,” said the 30-year-old. She believes that “people can say whatever they want behind their fake profiles online, which is of course very annoying.”
“It’s something I’ve dealt with my whole career and something I’m sure I’ll continue to do,” Stephens continued. Tennis greats Serena and Venus Williams and Real Madrid footballer Vinicius Jr. have also recently faced racist attacks.
The subject is particularly topical at the French Open, as the French tennis federation is making software with artificial intelligence available to players for the first time to filter out racist and other hateful comments. Stephens stated that he had not yet used the program, but also doubted its effectiveness.
She’s banned many of the obvious keywords on her Instagram account, “but that just doesn’t stop anyone from just typing in an asterisk or rewriting the term, which the software usually doesn’t recognize,” she laments.
