In Pakistan, relatives set fire to a young woman when she was alive, killing her. Several suspects have been arrested following the crime in Punjab province, a police officer said on Monday. “The woman wanted to marry a man of her choice, but her family refused,” police officer Bashir Ahmed told the German news agency. The victim’s father is suspected of complicity.
The woman succumbed to her injuries in hospital, police said. Before that, she would have described the course of events. Violence in the name of perceived honor is a recurring occurrence in the patriarchal South Asian country. According to the organization Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP), 384 cases were recorded last year alone. The perpetrators often get away with it.
The case of young influencer Qandeel Baloch caused a stir in 2016. Her brother had strangled the young woman. In her videos, Baloch repeatedly criticized the oppression of women and fought for equality. The young woman also showed up in the pool or gym. They were low-key images by Western standards, but polarized in conservative Muslim Pakistan. After Baloch’s death, the government increased the penalties for such crimes. (sda/dpa)
