The safety of civilian nuclear power plants in conflict areas is an important issue for Switzerland, the Swiss Ministry of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) said in a press release on Monday. Cassis has therefore been in close contact for months with the director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Marino Grossi, in connection with the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant.

The aim of the Council meeting on 30 May is to encourage the parties involved to adhere to the IAEA nuclear safety principles. The aim is to prevent the risk of a nuclear disaster at the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant.

The nuclear power plant is located in the immediate vicinity of the frontline near the Russian-occupied city of Enerhodar in southeastern Ukraine. Combat operations pose a direct threat to the nuclear power plant, a nuclear accident would have far-reaching humanitarian and environmental consequences not only for Ukraine, but also for the European continent.

Switzerland is a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council in 2023 and 2024. She will hold the presidency of the Council for a month in May. The role is mainly protocol in nature. Switzerland will assume the presidency for the second time in October 2024. (SDA)
