Donald Trump (76) is no longer the only rooster in the Republican basket. On Wednesday evening (local time), Ron DeSantis (44), the governor of Florida, announced his candidacy for the US presidential election in November 2024. That could be a problem for Trump.
With DeSantis’ candidacy, everything has become more complicated, not only for Trump, but for the entire Republican party: they now have to decide who to run with for the Oval Office. A real ordeal, given that much of the Republican base still idolizes Trump, but indecisive voters are more drawn to newcomer DeSantis.
The numbers might help: DeSantis is currently well ahead of all other possible Elephant Party candidates, a CNN poll shows. But against Trump, his chances are still negligible. Trump is the first choice of 53 percent of Republican and Republican voters in the primary, about twice as popular as DeSantis at 26 percent.
But the man from Florida is by no means written off, at least not yet. He celebrates himself with some success as the new, better Trump. Without drama, without legacy issues. And like many rising political stars before him – for example, Barack Obama (61) and Bill Clinton (76) – he promises hope, a new beginning.
With his landslide victory in 2022, in which he was elected governor of his home state with 60 percent of the vote, he proved that DeSantis can’t just make big, populist slogans. He can turn words into deeds.
Not only did he earn the respect of Republicans, he also became a political terror to Democrats. Suddenly, they weren’t just dealing with the eccentric, hot-headed Trump. But also with a politician with great strategic calculations – who can sometimes keep a cool head.
For reality to contradict the numbers in the polls, DeSantis must first prevail against Trump. While the 45th president of the US has gone straight on the offensive, DeSantis isn’t breaking cover. That could end up being a fatal mistake — after all, Trump is known for his stamina in verbal wrestling.
If DeSantis hit back, the two brawlers could tear each other apart politically. And with it the republican republic.
