Christian B.* (45) is a convicted rapist and has been detained in Oldenburg since October 2020. He has to serve seven years, including for the rape of a 72-year-old American woman. And he’s the prime suspect in the Maddie case. The little girl disappeared without a trace in Portugal 16 years ago. This week, police made another attempt and followed a lead at a reservoir.
A few days earlier, Christian B. sent a four-page penciled letter, the Daily Mail reports. His writing is precise and his English is virtually flawless. Apparently it’s not the only letter the newspaper has received from him.
Christian B. laments, “You can’t imagine what it’s like when the whole world thinks you’re a child killer and you’re not.” And although the detectives are convinced of his guilt, B. believes that he will never stand trial: “I was told a long time ago that the prosecutor’s office is closing the Maddie case because there is not the slightest evidence. There will never be a trial. “
In the letter, Christian B. first talks about football, rants about the German national team, which is very bad, and complains about “millionaires chasing a ball”. That he likes soccer player Robert Lewandowski. Then he comes to his case.
The police and prosecutors tried to “create a monster”. He was “persecuted” and the detectives wanted to “make people believe I’m the one”. He goes through a psychological battle and writes about “torture I go through”. He never believed this was possible. “We are in Germany, not Pakistan”.
The prisoner made startling accusations to members of the investigative team, which the Daily Mail was unable to reproduce for legal reasons. In the letter he writes: “I mean a gay detective who is in love with a criminal. Excessive.”
In the letter, Christian B. tries to question the detectives. “Those responsible are not strong enough to admit that they made mistakes in the Maddie case. So they try desperately to accuse me of other strange things. It doesn’t matter that I look completely different from what the victims claim. I’d really like to know what they’re telling them to convince them it was me after all.”
The four-page letter ends with a drawing of a daisy having its petals plucked, around which the words “not guilty” and “guilty” circle. He writes: “Spring is coming…” (neo)
