DeSantis has taken off his velvet gloves: now the election campaign is getting dirty

Ron DeSantis (44) has come across as strangely inhibited in recent months when asked about his former sponsor Donald Trump (76). He barely got carried away by criticism and danced like a boxer around every single punch he could have landed him.

Not anymore.

DeSantis announced his candidacy on Wednesday, clearly removing his velvet gloves when it comes to Donald Trump. He has to – after all, this is his worst competitor and miles ahead in surveys.

His main accusations:

• “Weak” in “Law and Order”
• “He’s $8 trillion in debt”
• “He put Fauci in control”
• “He Moves Left”

In several interviews, he started shooting himself against Donald Trump.

Law and order, which Americans love so much, he undermined with his policies. In it he was “weak” and also moved “to the left”. For example, with the First Step Act – a measure to reduce prison sentences and promote rehabilitation – that Trump introduced in 2018.

“He passed this law, in fact it’s a prison break law!” DeSantis says it will repeal the First Step Act immediately if elected. He rants: “It has resulted in dangerous people being released from prison who have now relapsed and hurt some people very, very badly.”

What DeSantis – typical election campaigner – hides in these interviews: he himself voted in Congress for the first draft of the bill.

DeSantis allegedly fired Fauci

Trump’s team immediately punched him in the face. Spokesman Steven Cheung told the New York Times, “He can’t run away from his disastrous, embarrassing and low-energy campaign announcement. Newbie mistakes!”

In an interview with right-wing conservative Ben Shapiro, DeSantis accused Trump of dealing with the corona pandemic. Especially the enemy image of the Republicans, the top virologist Anthony Fauci, is a thorn in DeSantis’ side.

“He put Fauci first and put him in control and I think that had terrible consequences for the United States,” DeSantis said. The lockdowns would have destroyed the lives of “millions of people”. DeSantis says Fauci should have been fired — “but Trump honored him, too.”

DeSantis also spoke with conservative radio host Matt Murphy. “Trump is a different man than when he was in power in 2015. I don’t know what happened to him.” Christopher Wray’s appointment as FBI director was a mistake, he will fire him as president “on day one.”

“His polls are going down like a brick!”

And DeSantis also poked fun at Trump’s “accumulating nearly $8 trillion in debt in just four years as president.”

And Trump? As usual, he responded with a frontal attack: “Rob DeSanctimonious and his polls are falling like a rock!”
