This week there is movement again in the case of the missing Maddie McCann. At the instigation of the German investigative authorities, officials from Germany, Great Britain and Portugal have been searching the area around the Portuguese Arade reservoir since Tuesday. The goal was to obtain more information about Madeleine McCann’s disappearance. Detection dogs and drones were used, among other things.
The multi-day search ended on Thursday – the collected material is now being examined.
According to local media, the researchers took soil samples during the search. They also picked up several scraps of cloth. According to media reports, the search found the remains of a pink blanket and the pajamas Maddie was wearing on the day of her disappearance. There were initially no indications that any of the pieces of cloth found had anything to do with the case.
“The collected material will be handed over to the German authorities,” the Portuguese criminal investigation department said on Thursday. However, she gave no details about the finds or the specific purpose of the action.
Citing the Portuguese newspaper “Correio da Manha”, various media report that the search also found a “relevant clue”. The search would have focused on a specific area.
Madeleine McCann, also known as Maddie, has been missing for over 16 years, since May 3, 2007, the day she disappeared from a holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, on Portugal’s southern Algarve coast.
The detectives assume that the girl, who was almost four at the time, was kidnapped and murdered. However, there is no concrete evidence. Although the search for her was long and arduous and an international manhunt was also underway, Maddie McCann has disappeared to this day.
In 2020, the public prosecutor’s office in Braunschweig announced that it was investigating the case against Christian B., who was already in prison, for murder. The man has a criminal record for serious sexual abuse of children and regularly lived in the Algarve from 1995 to 2007. Authorities have not yet filed charges against him in the Maddie case.
